In pursuit of this objective, the college will continue to build interactive and strategic relationships with national and international organisations, including indigenous and multinational employers, forward-looking decision makers in the country's education sector, relevant state organisations and with its own customers: its current and former students.

An independent third-level education sector, though well-established in many other countries, is still a relatively new phenomenon in Ireland. In states such as France and USA, many of the elite business schools are privately owned. Although private second-level education has a long record of success in Ireland, a market-led approach to the third-level sector has only been evident since the late 1980's. At the fore-front of this development has been Portobello College Dublin.

Portobello College Dublin was founded by Raymond Kearns in 1989, in an environment where increasing numbers of second-level students were seeking access to a limited number of third-level places.

Despite the radical nature of the concept of privately managed third-level education, it was very quickly welcomed by students and their families and by the State. By 1991, the college was 'designated' by the state as an approved third-level college, under the auspices of the Higher Education & Training Awards Council (HETAC).

In addition to its HETAC validated degree programmes, the college also has diploma programmes, awarded by UK's Edexcel who are internationally renowned for their commitment to excellence.

Over 1100 students were registered on undergraduate programmes at Portobello College for the 2001/2002 academic year. With the college offering its HETAC-validated programmes through CAO since 1997, it is certain that a truly independent third-level option has secured its place in the mainstream of Irish third-level education

Portobello College is determined to provide students with the level of service they deserve.
